Periodic Accretion From A Circumbinary Disk In The Young Binary UZ Tau E

چکیده
Close pre-main-sequence binary stars are expected to clear central holes in their protoplanetary disks, but the extent to which material can flow from the circumbinary disk across the gap onto the individual circumstellar disks has been unclear. In binaries with eccentric orbits, periodic perturbation of the outer disk is predicted to induce mass flow across the gap, resulting in accretion that varies with the binary period. This accretion may manifest itself observationally as periodic changes in luminosity. Here we present a search for such periodic accretion in the premain-sequence spectroscopic binary UZ Tau E. We present BVRI photometry spanning 3 years; we find that the brightness of UZ Tau E is clearly periodic, with a best-fit period of 19:16 0:04 days. This is consistent with the spectroscopic binary period of 19.13 days, refined here from analysis of new and existing radial velocity data. The brightness of UZ Tau E shows significant random variability, but the overall periodic pattern is a broad peak in enhanced brightness, spanning more than half the binary orbital period. The variability of the H line is not as clearly periodic, but given the sparseness of the data, some periodic component is not ruled out. The photometric variations are in good agreement with predictions from simulations of binaries with orbital parameters similar to those of UZ Tau E, suggesting that periodic accretion does occur from circumbinary disks, replenishing the inner circumstellar disks and possibly extending the timescale over which they might form planets.

Binary Black Hole Accretion Flows in Merged Galactic Nuclei
We study the accretion flows from the circumbinary disks onto the supermassive binary black holes in a subparsec scale of the galactic center , using a smoothed particles hydrodynamics (SPH) code. Simulation models are presented in four cases of a circular binary with equal masses and unequal masses, and of an eccentric binary with equal masses and unequal masses. We find that the circumblack-h...
متن کاملA New Approach for Probing Circumbinary Disks
Circumbinary disks are considered to exist in a wide variety of astrophysical objects, e.g., young binary stars, protoplanetary systems, and massive binary black hole systems in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, there is no definite evidence for the circumbinary disk except for some in a few young binary star systems. In this Letter, we study possible oscillation modes in circumbinary dis...
متن کاملYoung Binary Stars and Associated Disks
The typical product of the star formation process is a multiple star system, most commonly a binary star. Binaries have provided the first dynamical measures of the masses of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. These measurements have established that T Tauri-like stars are indeed of solar mass or less, and have provided preliminary support for the mass calibrations of theoretical PMS evolutionary t...
متن کاملCircumbinary Disk evolution
We study the evolution of circumbinary disks surrounding classical T Tau stars. High resolution numerical simulations are employed to model a system consisting of a central eccentric binary star within an accretion disk. The disk is assumed to be infinitesimally thin, however a detailed energy balance including viscous heating and radiative cooling is applied. A novel numerical approach using a...
متن کاملThe Disk around Coku Tau / 4 : Circumbinary , Not Transitional
CoKu Tau/4 has been labeled as one of the very few known transition disk objects: disks around young stars that have their inner disks cleared of dust, arguably due to planetary formation. We report aperture-masking interferometry and adaptive optics imaging observations showing that CoKu Tau/4 is in fact a near-equal binary star of projected separation ∼53 mas (∼8 AU). The spectral energy dist...
